May 22nd 2023

Knee pain is one of the most widespread and dysfunctional injuries in society, whether in young people, adults or the elderly.

The knee is made up of a large number of structures and is a junction between the hip and the foot. This makes it a difficult area to assess and complex to treat in some cases. Depending on which tissue is affected, the degree of injury and the type of patient, symptoms may vary.

The main structures that make up the knee are listed below according to where they are located and where they can cause pain.

  • Pain in the anterior aspect of the knee: patella, quadricipital tendon, patellar tendon, quadriceps, anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments.
  • Pain in the posterior aspect of the knee: hamstrings, popliteus, calf, soleus.
  • Pain in lateral aspect of the knee: lateral ligament, lateral meniscus, iliotibial band, peroneus, tibio-peroneal joint.
  • Pain in the internal aspect of the knee: internal ligament, internal meniscus, goose foot, adductors.
