Plantar Fasciosis: What is it and why does it occur?

June 5th 2023

The plantar fascia is a connective tissue structure that connects the heel of the foot and the base of the toes. Its injury is commonly known as plantar fasciitis, although recent studies have shown that in addition to inflammation in the fascia there is degeneration, so the correct term would be plantar fasciosis.

This injury is usually quite painful and disabling, as it affects the foot and can greatly limit the quality of life of the person who suffers from it. Some of the symptoms are:

  • Pain in the centre of the sole of the foot.
  • Burning.
  • Limitation of movement.
  • Alteration of gait.
  • Tingling.
  • Electrical sensation. -Loss of strength and weakness in the foot-leg.

But why does it occur? Its origin is usually due to multiple causes and not just one in particular, some of them may be the following:

  • Continuous use of very narrow and closed toe shoes or heels.
  • Overweight, poor diet and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Standing all day long.
  • Repeated impacts on the heel or toes during different activities.
  • Having a heel spur or previous injury to the foot.
  • Excessive muscle tone in the entire posterior chain of the foot and leg.
  • Blood circulation problems in the legs.
  • Bad walking and incorrect support.
