Treatment for Jaw Dysfunctions

April 3rd 2023

The jaw is a structure whose injuries can become complex to resolve, which is why it is essential to carry out a good assessment and create the ideal treatment plan according to the type of patient and their symptoms.

In a previous post we explained the different conditions that can appear in the temporomandibular joint or TMJ. This post will focus on the techniques and different treatments available to resolve the numerous TMJ dysfunctions.

1) Chiropractic spinal adjustments are indicated when you want to resolve spinal dysfunctions, in this case of occipital and cervical origin. Joint adjustments can also be performed on the TMJ itself. The aim is to increase the range of movement and stimulate the nervous system.

2) Cranial osteopathy is highly effective, as osteopathic manual techniques applied in the orofacial and cranial sphere can correct dysfunctions and symptoms of the TMJ.

3) Physiotherapy can be another great ally, as it has a large number of techniques for tackling TMJ problems: vertebral and joint manual therapy, neuromodulation of the trigeminal and facial nerves, electro dry needling of trigger points and therapeutic exercise.

Each discipline always seeks to eliminate the symptoms: pain and discomfort, restrictions in the mandibular-buccal-cervical ranges of movement, excessive tone of the facial-mandibular-occipital musculature, incorrect muscle recruitment, etc.
