Sitting at a computer all day

January 31st 2022

If you work sitting in front of a computer all day long, your back is probably suffering the consequences. Why is that? Because of the bad positions you hold for long periods of time day after day. If you add to that the fact that sitting is not the healthiest for your back, you can get as a result: pain, posture alterations, tiredness, poor circulation in the legs, etc.

The human body is designed to move and not to remain static for a large part of the day. Unfortunately, some professions involving computers cause us to sit all day and there is a lack of movement. Teleworking seemed to give the possibility to break this bad cycle of sedentary lifestyles, but nothing could be further from the truth. Non-ergonomic working environments, family stress or lack of social interaction are some of the problems to deal with when working from home.

However, do not lose hope, there is always a solution or several solutions, and they are very simple: exercise at least 4 to 5 hours a week, get enough sunshine a day, reduce stress, follow a balanced diet, have an ergonomic work environment adapted to your needs or go to your specialised assessment and treatment centre for advice or a specific treatment. In this post we are going to mention a number of very simple tips that anyone can carry out and that will help to improve the working environment and the feelings of those who apply them:

1. The computer should be placed in front of us (not to one side) at eye level. If it were at a low height, it would cause us to lower our eyes and tilt our head forward, thus increasing the strain on the spine and other tissues.

2. The table or desk is recommended to be at the level of the navel.

3. The chair used should be ergonomic: with variable height, lumbar support, rotatable, with armrests and a comfortable, firm seat.

4. The use of footrests is highly recommended to vary the position of the legs and avoid crossing them, thus improving blood circulation.

5. Use natural light if possible.

6. Limit excessive noise or sudden temperature changes that may impede concentration and task accomplishment.

7. Every hour or hour and a half take a short break, get up from your chair and rest your eyes. Move your neck, shoulders, back and hips to reduce the tension accumulated from sitting. Drink a glass of water, eat something to activate the brain, have a short chat with someone, etc.

Following these simple tips may help you to cope better with your working day. However, if you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be able to help you with your query and solve your problems.
