Osteopathy and Whiplash

October 25th 2021

The whiplash syndrome is caused by a subsequent impact (traffic accident or fall) in which there is a hyperextension of the cervical spine by sudden acceleration, followed by a hyperflexion, where being unexpected, the tissues are relaxed and do not retain the excess mobility.

Whiplash will cause both bone and soft tissue injuries.

At the bone level, the cervical joints and capsules will be injured, and as for the soft tissues, those that will suffer the most are the nuchal ligament, the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the splenius of the head and the upper portion of the trapezius.

Due to the impact, the injury mechanism will be responsible for the anteriorization of the cervical, dorsal and sacral vertebrae and at the cranial level for the anteriorization and enchantment of the occipital between the temporals, the compression of the SEB (sphenobasilar synchondrosis), and the temporals in traumatic internal rotation.

All these dysfunctions will be manifested by pain in the cervical area, pain in the temporomandibular area (jaw), headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness or irradiation to the arms.

Our osteopaths will be in charge of reversing the occipital wedging between the temporal bones, which is the cause of the closure of the posterior slit hole through which important structures such as the jugular vein (which drains most of the intracranial blood) and cranial nerves IX, X and XI run, both explaining the feeling of dizziness, tinnitus and headaches that the patient presents.

In Madrid Health, we have extensive experience treating these type of pathologies, so if you have had a car accident or a fall and have some of these symptoms do not hesitate to contact us.
