Jaw Physiotherapy

October 19th 2021

Did you know that suffering jaw pain is not something normal, and that physiotherapy can reduce the discomfort suffered? Jaw injuries are one of the main unknowns in the world of physiotherapy, fortunately there are professionals specialised in their treatment who can help to improve those annoying symptoms and help to improve the quality of life of the people who suffer from them.

Whether it is due to dental problems, bruxism tension, daily stress or any other cause, jaw injuries are very annoying as they affect people’s sleep, their character and even their diet.

Physiotherapy has many techniques that can alleviate some of these discomforts through a correct assessment, a specific treatment plan and subsequent therapeutic intervention. The most common injuries at the mandibular level are:

  • Bruxism
  • Pain on opening-closing and other movements of the jaw
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Mandibular disc impingement
  • Trigger points in masaterals, pterygoids, temporalis muscle
  • Alteration of the position of the head and postural decompensation
  • Changes in character, irritability, mood

The techniques that exist to alleviate these ailments are fundamentally manual, consisting of movements, pressures and exercises carried out by the physiotherapist to alleviate pain and improve the functionality of all the structures. However, it is also possible to use cranial osteopathy techniques and invasive techniques with needles such as dry needling and neuromodulation.
