Neuromodulation in Low Back Pain

August 16th 2021

Functional Neuromodulation is an invasive, safe, effective and practically painless technique, which consists of stimulating a peripheral nerve with a needle, associated with a low-frequency electric current, seeking a sensory and/or motor response. The sensation reported by the patient during the application of this technique is a tingling in the area and in the nerve pathway, as well as small involuntary contractions of the muscles.

The main objective of this technique is to re-establish the function of the nervous system after an injury to the body. When electrical stimulation is applied through the needle, it reaches the nerve, stimulates it and achieves the following effects:

  • Rapid reduction of acute and chronic pain
  • Normalisation of neuromuscular function and muscle tone
  • Improvement of vascularisation of the treated area and general tissue trophism
  • Reduction of pain and improvement of neuromotor control (improvement and increase of mobility)
  • Effective in any pathology of the musculoskeletal system and is compatible with other techniques
  • Spectacular results in a very short time, even in the first session

Neuromodulation can be used in almost any type of pathology, such as lumbar pain, one of the most typical injuries in today’s society. The action protocol depends on the patient’s situation, their symptoms and the professional applying the neuromodulation technique.

Low back pain can present itself in different ways, either with limitation of movement in the spinal column, pain in the lumbar-gluteal area, stiffness or a sensation of blockage, sciatica, etc. Neuromodulation can help to reduce all these symptoms and normalise the function of the peripheral nervous system, improving the patient’s quality of life.

The only contraindications for this type of technique are: needle phobia, metal allergy, if the area where the needle is inserted has wounds or desensitivity disorders, pacemakers, vascular phenomena, pregnancy and acute infection or oncological processes.
