In Madrid Health we’ve been recommending these custom designed orthotics / insoles to our patients for several years now… and we’ve seen how “foot orthotics” can really add HUGE value to any person’s quality of life and ability to maintain independence, pain free life or if used for sport, excel far better than would have been possible without them!
A true custom orthotic is one that matches your feet’s specific arch height (with modifications), width and of course, the length. True custom orthotics are made ONLY when a laboratory receives an impression of your foot – of which we utilise Medical Thermography analysis and a highly specific foam casting.
Beware of orthotics that claim to mould to your feet through heat – this is a scam. It is true your feet need to flex, but using very flexible materials does not give desired results.
Beware of orthotics that are loose, can bend easily. They may appear cheaper but will not support your feet to provide optimum support. The reason flexible material gets used is because the client doesn’t think to complain as the orthotics causes no discomfort yet their original symptoms usually persist.
As a keen Runner I have designed 100s of custom orthoics for Runners, helping them to excel and avoid injury and foot problems.
Orthotics should have some rigidity to them. Remember, the whole point is to provide support. However, we ensure there is comfortable rigidity and support to every orthotic we design in Madrid Health.
One of the first questions I receive when I recommend orthotics is:
Why are custom orthotics more expensive than the ones you could go out and buy in somewhere like a pharmacy.
Simply put, those
insoles bought in shops or pharmacies are likely to be just loose and thin inserts made of one material designed for everyone. There's been no thoughts of time, materials, individual conditions gone into the design and manufacture of the orthotic.
The custom orthotics we design in Madrid Health is a comfortable corrective device worn inside a shoe which helps the muscles, tendons and bones of your feet and lower legs function reducing pain and any stiffness. Custom-made orthotics are from our thermography technology and foot impressions. When appropriately designed to treat a medical condition and custom-made just for you, orthotics can decrease pain, not only in your feet, but more commonly in other parts of the body, such as your knees, hips and lower back.
Prescription Foot Orthotics ARE the most accurate custom functional foot orthotics and are made from non-weight bearing moulds of your feet (but you don’t need a note from your doctor to have one).
They are designed to control alignment and function of your foot in order to treat or prevent injury-causing force on bones, joints, tendons and ligaments. Often they are used to limit motions such as excessive pronation (rolling-in) and excessive supination (rolling-out).
They also act to make activities such as running, walking – even standing – more efficient. What’s more, they can act to redistribute pressure on the bottom of the foot to relieve pain from excessive pressure or calluses.
This is a very detailed subject, however in general, most physical pain such as the back, ankle, hip or knee, is the result of a dysfunctional relationship between the bones and muscles of the foot connecting to the lower limbs. Even the slightest misalignment can result in significant discomfort and problems that may have been happening for many months or years. This abnormal function can result in problems we can help with such as bunions, hallux valgus, pronation(flat feet), plantar fasciitis, knee pain and back pain.
The function of custom orthotics is so more than a foot support. Wearing the right custom orthotics realigns the structures of the lower limb biomechanics to correct and prevent problems.
Our custom orthotics at Madrid Health can be designed for whatever shoe you desire! We can design them for work shoes, ballerinas, casual shoes and absolutely for sports shoes. A keen runner, Dr Ben Payne has designed 100s of custom orthotics for runners, helping them to excel and avoid injury and foot problems.
