Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

A big question I'm often asked is what is Chiropractic and how can the adjustment performed by Chiropractors help me?

Chiropractic is a profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, particularly those of the spine.

(British Chiropractic Association)

Chiropractors work with a focus on the nervous system. When there is a specific misalignment of the spine it can interfere with the nervous system and whatever the nerve controls can be affected which can lead to dysfunction and long-term problems. The misalignments of the spine and pressure on the nerves are caused by two types of trauma. Big traumas like accidents, falling over and small, repetitive traumas that happen every day in our lives.

Nervous System

Most misalignments in the spine come from years of bad habits and poor posture placing pressure on joints, nerves and the muscles.

These small traumas can be caused by repeated bad posture (e.g. slouching in front of a computer or phone) or other habits over a long duration which causes poor condition of the spine, e.g. emotional stress, lifting children incorrectly, gardening, not exercising properly as well as arthritis developing in the joints. When these joints become misaligned it can cause a lot of health problems.

Our Madrid Chiropractor, Ben Payne, works by using specialist techniques and technology to assess the nervous system, joints, spine and muscles within the body. Through specific adjustments we then work by realigning the joints of the spine and removing pressure on the nervous system. Then with proper alignment restored you start feeling a HUGE DIFFERENCE!

We will always answer the 4 most important questions on a patient's mind:

  • What's Wrong?
  • Can it be fixed?
  • How long will it take?
  • How much will it cost?

Ben Payne, Madrid Chiropractor, is a British qualified Chiropractor and registered with the General Chiropractic Council. He has owned and managed clinics in the UK, Portugal and now Spain.

Benefits of Chiropractic

Our first goal with any patient is to remove discomfort and most importantly get them strengthened and feeling better throughout the day. However a far better goal that as a team we strive to achieve with Chiropractic is to improve our patient's overall health with factors like posture, sleep, energy in the day, being able to lift your kids, play with the grandkids, not wake up in pain and feel young! We are dedicated to helping you achieve the best results possible.

Chiropractic for SENIORS

Bone and joint disease are the most common cause of disability in older people and as a result, quality of life can be severely compromised. The onset of musculoskeletal disorders increases significantly with old age and if left untreated can greatly reduce overall well-being and health.

Restoring better spinal function may help improve problems associated with the over 65's age group including mobility, vitality, endurance, and appetite. Many patients report improvements with arthritic symptoms and other chronic ailments often associated with the aging process. The adjusting technique used by our chiropractors will be modified for maximum comfort and results.

Pregnancy

Chiropractic for PREGANANCIES

Pregnancy is an exciting and positive experience for many women, however as your baby grows, the hollow in your back may become more pronounced, which can cause backache. During pregnancy, your ligaments in your body naturally become softer and stretch to prepare you for labour. This can put a strain on the joints of your lower back and pelvis.

Back pain in pregnancy is very common and affects almost three thirds of women at some stage of their pregnancy. Lower back pain and pelvic girdle pain are the most common complaints for women pre and post pregnancy.

At Madrid Health we use benches specifically adapted for the treatment of pregnant women and these can be used all the way through pregnancy. Chiropractic treatment during pregnancy is both safe and very gentle. We use specific techniques to encourage realignment of your lower back and pelvis.

Chiropractic for WORKERS

Back pain is the number one cause of long term absence among employees, and is a common cause of short-term absence. It is estimated that up to 60% of people on long-term sick leave cite musculoskeletal problems as the reason.

Untreated back pain can lead to serve long-term chronic conditions; affecting the ability to work effectively; resulting in poor performance and may even reduce or prevent participation in activities outside of the workplace.

We treat a number of professionals and manual workers whose back and neck complaints are a direct result of poor posture, long-working hours, accidents, highly stressful & pressured working environments, heavy labour and a general lack of exercise.

Chiropractic FAQ

Chiropractic works because you are a self-healing organism controlled and regulated by your nervous system.

Millions of instructions flow from you brain, down the spinal cord, and out to every organ and tissue. Signals sent back to the brain confirm whether your body is working as it should. Improper motion or position of the moving bones of the spine may interfere with this vital exchange by irritating nearby nerves and the tissues they control. Precise chiropractic adjustments are intended to improve mind-body communications Health often returns with improved nervous system control of the body.

Chiropractic is a science, art and philosophy. It’s a scientific fact that your brain and nervous system control every cell, tissue and organ of your body. Research confirms that interferences to the nervous system change the way the body functions. Nerve interferences are most common along the spine. Objective tests help locate these interferences, called subluxations, and precise chiropractic adjustments are designed to help correct or reduce them.

Chiropractic doesn’t cure anything! Nor is it a treatment for disease. If there’s going to be any curing, your body will do it. Not doctors. And certainly not drugs. The best doctors reduce the interferences that may be preventing your body from expressing its inborn healing capacity. That’s why chiropractors are interested in the nervous system. With a revived nerve supply, your self-healing abilities are unleashed.

A pinched nerve is rare. It is more likely that an adjacent spinal bone irritates, stretches, rubs or chafes a nerve. These subluxations distort the nerve messages sent between the brain and the body. This can produce unhealthy alterations to the organs and tissues connected by the affected nerves.

There are three basic causes of subluxations. Physical causes could include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions and improper lifting. Emotions such as grief, anger and fear can cause subluxations. Chemical causes could include alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet.

You can have subluxations and not even know it. Like the early stages of tooth decay or cancer, subluxations can be present before warning signs appear. The results of a thorough examination can show the location and severity of subluxations you may have.

Yes. Learning to walk, riding a bike or playing sports can cause subluxations that often passed off as mere “growing pains”. Chiropractic care detects and helps correct these spinal distortions, providing a clearer path toward proper development. Ignored, these problems may worsen until they become more difficult to correct as an adult.

Sometimes. Today's hectic lifestyles are a constant source of subluxations. Fortunately, our bodies have the ability to self-correct many of these problems as we bend and stretch, or when we sleep at night. When subluxations don't resolve, you need to see a chiropractic doctor!

Chiropractic adjustments usually involve a quick thrust that helps add motion to spinal joints that aren't moving right. Some methods use the doctor's hands, an instrument, a special table or the force of gravity. There are many ways to adjust the spine.

Adjustments feel good! Many patients report a sense of well-being and calming sense of ease. Repeated adjustments are often necessary, and if adjustments weren’t comfortable, patients wouldn’t return. Chiropractors Excel at making spinal adjustments comfortable and effective.

No. Only the spinal joints that are locked up receive adjustments. This allows weakened muscles and ligaments to stabilize and heal.

Highly unlikely. A chiropractic adjustment is special. It has the right amount of energy, delivered to an exact spot, at a precise angle, at just the right time. The intent is to get a "stuck" spinal joint moving again, helping reduce nerve interference. Years of training, practice and experience make chiropractic adjustments specific and safe.

Yes. A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are "remarkably safe." By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record. A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited. Compare the statistics. Adjustments are about 100 times safer than taking an over-the-counter pain reliever.

No. Some people can make their joints "pop," but that's not an adjustment! Worse, damage can occur by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even your chiropractic doctor must consult a colleague to benefit from chiropractic care.

Special fluids lubricate each spinal joint. Some adjusting methods can produce a sound as the gas and fluids in the joint shift – like releasing the pressure in a bottle of champagne. The sound, if it occurs, is fascinating, but isn’t a guide to the quality of effectiveness of an adjustment.

No. Each patient's spine and care plan is unique. With 24 moving bones in the spine, each of which can move in seven different directions, we see a wide variety of spinal patterns. Each patient's care is custom-tailored for their age, condition and health goals.

The number of adjustments varies with each patient and their individual health goals. Many patients sense progress within a week or two of frequent visits. Visits become less often as your spine stabilizes. In chronic cases, complete healing can take months or even years.

Some patients experience almost instant relief. Others discover it can take many weeks or months. Many factors can affect the healing process. How long have you had your problem? Are you keeping your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Do you smoke? Are you in otherwise good condition? Within a short period of time, most patients sense enough progress to fully carry out their doctor's recommendations.

Of course. When developing a care plan, your chiropractic doctor considers the unique circumstances of each patient. There are many ways to adjust the spine. The method selected will be best suited to your age, size and condition.

Yes. Rest assured that your chiropractic doctor will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. Surgery often causes instability above or below the involved level. These areas will be the focus of your chiropractic care.

Yes. Pregnancy may be one of the best times to benefit from chiropractic care. While it’s always best to have a properly working nervous system, it’s especially helpful during pregnancy. Adjusting methods are modified to mother’s size, weight and condition. During this time of weight gain and hormonal changes, many mothers seek chiropractic care because it is drug free. Many report shorter and easier births.

Even today's natural childbirth methods can affect an infant's spine. Preliminary studies suggested that colic, unusual crying, poor appetite, ear infections or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress. Pediatric adjustments are gentle. Knowing exactly where to adjust, the doctor applies no more pressure than you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato.

No. Chiropractic doctors don't dispense drugs. Because we rely on natural methods, we can show you how to use ice to control painful symptoms. When properly applied, ice can have an analgesic effect without the side effects of pain medications.

After patients get the relief they want, many choose to continue with some type of periodic care. These visits can help support the final stages of healing and help detect and resolve new problems before they become serious. Our job is to offer the very best care we can, and your job is to decide how much of it you want.

Results vary. Many report long-term changed, including renewed energy and vitality. Naturally, those who have neglected their health or who have delayed taking action may not see lasting changes. Many discover the value of ongoing chiropractic checkups to help avoid a relapse.

If we're unable to find and correct the cause of your particular health problem, we will refer you to other specialists who may be able to help. Your health is our primary goal.

Today's chiropractor receives a formal education that is comparable to that received by medical practitioners. However, since chiropractors don’t prescribe drugs or perform surgery, they instead receive in-depth training in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, diagnosis, X-ray and adjusting techniques.

Chiropractors complete a 5 year degree with classroom and laboratory work in anatomy, physiology, public health, microbiology, pathology and biochemistry as well as hands on practice to ensure they have sufficient training and are qualified to help all prospective patients.
